Performing Arts groups

In these groups we enjoy listening to music and watching films or stage performances in the comfort of member’s homes.

Music Appreciation                                                        1st Thursday 1.30 pm

music_v2

For the last year or so, we have been following How to Listen to and Understand Great Music, a DVD course by Professor Robert Greenberg who is a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker. We started with ancient and medieval music and progressed through the Baroque and Classical eras. We are now up to the late 19th Century Romantic era. This covers many of our favourite composers but Prof Greenberg provides much more interesting information which adds to our appreciation.

We will finish this course early in 2018 then begin a new course by Prof Greenberg covering more modern music. Do not be discouraged! It is not all weird atonal music but should give us a new appreciation of this period.

Art-House Films Groups                 1st Friday 1.30 pm, 4th Friday 1:30 pm

film_dvdsOur definition of an art-house film is any film worth talking about. Mostly our films are from members’ private DVD collections. Each session starts with a short introduction. After watching  the film, we have afternoon tea and discuss the film, then the group chooses a film for the next meeting. We are not afraid of subtitles, and our films  include selections from various “best films ever made” lists, New Zealand films, quirky films, and genre films with something special to offer: in fact, any film worth talking about.

Stars in Their Eyes             4th Thursday 1:30 pm      Starts in March 2018

Dr Zhivago 3This new group will complement our Art House Film groups by providing an amazing variety of mainstream English-language movies. The group will be able to choose movies from many genres: dramas, historical fiction, westerns, thriller and classics like Dr Zhivago and Bonnie and Clyde. Each meeting will showcase a different actor or director, people such as Judy Dench, Maggie Smith, Robert de Niro and Clint Eastwood. After watching a movie, the group will discuss the movie, the acting style, and other movies of the star or director.
