In these groups we enjoy listening to music and watching films or stage performances in the comfort of member’s homes.
Music Appreciation 1st Thursday 1.30 pm
For the last year or so, we have been following How to Listen to and Understand Great Music, a DVD course by Professor Robert Greenberg who is a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker. We started with ancient and medieval music and progressed through the Baroque and Classical eras. We are now up to the late 19th Century Romantic era. This covers many of our favourite composers but Prof Greenberg provides much more interesting information which adds to our appreciation.
We will finish this course early in 2018 then begin a new course by Prof Greenberg covering more modern music. Do not be discouraged! It is not all weird atonal music but should give us a new appreciation of this period.
Art-House Films Groups 1st Friday 1.30 pm, 4th Friday 1:30 pm
Our definition of an art-house film is any film worth talking about. Mostly our films are from members’ private DVD collections. Each session starts with a short introduction. After watching the film, we have afternoon tea and discuss the film, then the group chooses a film for the next meeting. We are not afraid of subtitles, and our films include selections from various “best films ever made” lists, New Zealand films, quirky films, and genre films with something special to offer: in fact, any film worth talking about.
It’s Show Time 3rd Wednesday 2 pm
Brighten up your days with some catchy tunes from familiar musicals, old and not so old.
This group has fun watching some of those great old favourites on DVD. If you have wonderful memories of musical shows, their lively music and colourful costumes and would love to see them again, why not join It’s Show Time. We have access to a great selection of DVDs and you are welcome to bring along some of your own favourites to share.
